CALL FOR ECO BRANDS

At Eco Fashion Week Africa, we believe that the world does not need another ordinary Fashion Week. This Fashion week revolves around tackling global textile waste by reusing what’s already produced instead of producing new clothes for the runway. If your brand upcycles with no harsh chemicals, focuses on empowering individuals in underserved communities, or  aligns with what we do, we would love to invite you to showcase during the second season where we will attract conscious consumers worldwide to look out for the best brands that are creating wearable pieces from existing materials. Write to info@ecofashionweekafrica.com and we will get back to you with more details.

THE NEXT BEST KENYAN TEXTILE UPCYCLER CHALLENGE

The saying that “we have enough clothes to last us through generations” expresses the spirit of sustainable fashion, highlighting the excessive production and consumption patterns of the contemporary fashion industry. This saying is rooted in numerous reports and studies on the environmental impact of “fast fashion”.

For instance, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, in its 2017 report “A New Textiles Economy: Redesigning fashion’s future,” shed light on the textile industry’s cyclical trend and its repercussions.

The report underscored that more than $500 billion of value is lost every year due to clothing underutilisation and the lack of recycling. Moreover, it mentioned that the average number of times a garment is worn before it ceases to be used has decreased by 36% in 15 years and according to the Council for Textile Recycling, an estimated 25 billion pounds of textiles are generated in the United States annually, amounting to about 82 pounds per resident, but only 15% is recycled, with the remainder ending up in landfills (Global South).

Therefore, Eco Fashion Week Africa is rallying urging a shift away from the relentless production of new clothes for runway shows and leading by example by heading towards a system that respects the lifecycle of clothing. We are highly favoring reuse and recycling, which could potentially serve many future generations with the existing volumes of garments.

So far, We we have engaged with an innovative college, a nurturing tailoring school for underprivileged children, and a monumental women’s empowerment tailoring organization to uplift communities through fashion. Now we are calling the creative spirits and the green thinkers of our beloved country to rise to the challenge of becoming Kenya’s Next Best Textile Upcycler.
